Road trips are a fantastic way to travel, but as a family, they can turn sour quick if everyone on board doesn’t feel happy with the journey. If you want to have a successful road trip as a family, check out these tips before packing the car.
Let Everyone Have a Say
Even if the kids are young, get them involved in the planning. Take votes on whether the kids want to go to the mountains, the beach or the forest and let them pick some fun activities to do along the way. Get them excited so that they can look forward to what long driving hours will accomplish.
Have Lots of Snacks
Food and drink are one of the easiest ways to keep kids happy in the car. Bring a cooler, pack some juice, crackers, fruits and a few sweet treats to keep them occupied, happy and looking forward to the rest of the trip.
Portable DVD players, audio books and kids’ song CDs will be your best friend during the trip. Pack some headphones so that you can listen to your own music while the kids keep themselves busy. You can also devise some games like I Spy or a list of riddles to play together.
Have a GPS
Whether it’s on your phone or one that sticks to your dashboard, make sure to have a reliable GPS. Nothing is worse than getting lost when the driver is tired and the kids are cranky so make sure you always know where you’re going or have a way to get back on track.
Make Lots of Stops
Making stops will help the driving go by faster and give everyone a chance to stretch their legs. Try to make the stops more interesting than gas stations and restaurants too. Try beaches or quirky road side attractions.
